Why is Rear Brake Pad Replacement Necessary?

Just like the ones on the front, rear brake pads are composed of a metal backing and a heat-resistant lining. It’s the lining that comes into contact with the brake rotors, keeping both the pads and rotors from suffering friction damage. The lining will wear thin over time; if you go too long between brake pad changes, the lining will wear out entirely. This will expose the metal backing to the rotors, which can cause serious damage.

When Should I Change the Rear Brake Pads?

Rear brake pads wear out at different rates for everyone. We generally change rear brake pads somewhere between 25,000 miles and 50,000 miles. Since this is a 25,000-mile gap, we recommend that you have us perform regular brake inspections, where our technicians can take a closer look at the brake pad lining and how it’s wearing down.

Many brake pads also have a built-in wear indicator tab that begins to squeal when the lining level is low enough to warrant new brake pads. If you hear a squealing sound when you step on the brakes, schedule your appointment immediately.

What About Aftermarket Brake Pads?

Though it may be possible to save a few bucks at the time of installation by going to a place that uses aftermarket brake pads, though this may seem appealing, it may actually cost more in the long run. Many aftermarket brake pads don’t last as long as genuine VW brake pads, so you’ll have to replace them more often.

How Can I Make My Rear Brake Pads Last Longer?

One of the most important ways you can make all your brake pads last longer is to brake slowly, coming to a smooth stop rather than slamming on the brakes. However, there’s something you can do that will specifically help the rear brake pads: clean out your trunk! If you’re carrying unnecessary weight in the trunk, the rear brake pads will have to deal with more strain. Remove all unneeded cargo from the trunk for longer-lasting brake pads.
